The Kumaon Village Trek


Duration: 6 nights and 7 days


To have a proper understanding of the village life of Kumaon region the idea of village trekking has come into existence. One can choose a night stay in a village home to experience the simple and ancient culture followed by the villagers.



Slates, stones and woods are used to build indigenous homes, lime and mud are also used to paint the floors and walls as it helps in keeping the house cool and warm during summers and winters. Recently private outhouse bathroom equipped with western toilets, fresh towels, hand- made soaps and running hot water have also been added to the local homes so as to give a comfortable stay to their guests. After a day long trek one can take a delight in the mouth-watering Kumaoni cuisine.



An English speaking local guide is always there to accompany throughout the trip.

Kumaon lies in the foot of Himalayas, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Panchchuli are some of the world renowned peaks situated in its backdrop and is bordered by Tibet and Nepal in its east and North.



Best time- Mid of September to Mid of April
During Springs-With a perfect combination of Rhododendron and fruit trees are bloomed through the region of Kumaon.
During Autumn- The region is blossomed with cherry trees and cosmos flowers.
During Winter- As the region is covered with snow one can smell the sweet fragrance of mimosa.

Day wise itinerary

 

Day-1: Arrival in Almora (10 km/ 5-6 hrs drive)
Your trek will commence from Almora, one of the premier hill stations discovered during the British empire. You can either take an early morning or overnight train from Delhi to Kathgodham Railway station and drive towards Almora (3hrs). Check into the hotel after breakfast continue your journey with a walk to Chitai Village, visit the bell temple of Chitai the speciality of this temple is it is covered with a lot of bells of all shapes and size. En route to the temple you will come across the Chir pine and Cedar forest giving you a spectacular view of the Himalayas. Overnight stay at the Hotel of Almora.

 

 

Day-2: Almora- Binsar wildlife Sanctuary- Almora( 24km/ 2 hrs drive/ 6- 7 hrs walk)
After breakfast drive towards Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. Through a rhododendron and oak forest, walk up to the zero point with an altitude of 2400m, take a delight in the panoramic view and trek down towards the Shiva Temple, from here trek further down towards Kangarchina following Western Binsar Ridge. You will reach a point from where you can have a beautiful view of the Himalayas on one side and the valley on the other. Packed lunch will be served on the way. We continue to Drive towards Almora. Overnight stay at the Almora Hotel.

 

Day- 3: Almora- Deora Village ( 12 kms/ 6-7 hrs walk)
After Breakfast check out from the hotel and proceed towards Deora Village, a small and beautiful village of Kumaon where you will find perfectly carved doors and windows in every household. On the way to Deora will come across spectacular views of the waterfalls, winding streams, Chir Forest and Terrace farms. You will also come across 1000-year-old Kali Temple before you reach Deora. On arrival you will be greeted with a welcome drink and the traditional Kumaoni cuisine prepared by the host. Have a chat with locals and get a chance to listen to the folklores and past tales of the village. Overnight homestay at Deodar.

 

Day- 4: Deora Village- Paliu Village (13 km/ 6- 7 hrs walk)
After breakfast commence your village trails of Kumaon and get the unconventional experience of the village life, the ancient culture, tradition and rituals still part of their life. En route you will come across the river stream, the flour mills and terrace farms. Finish your trip after reaching Paliu Village. Overnight homestay at Paliu Village.

 

Day- 5: Paliu Village- Sokyatal Village (14 kms/ 7- 8 hrs walk)
After breakfast start your walking trip through the Chir Pine Forest, passing small scattered villages trek upwards the Sokyatal which is located in the middle of the rhododendron and oak forest. On reaching the Sokyatal village you will get the amazing you of the Himalayas and the valley, the best part is the sunset which covers the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. Overnight homestay at Sokyatal Village.

 

Day- 6: Sokyatal Village- Jageshwar (5 kms/ 2- 3 hrs walk)
After breakfast start your walk towards Jageshwar a village which resorts the some of the oldest temples of the lord Shiva. One of the 12 Jyotirlinga is located in Jageshwar. Surounded by the pine trees it is said Jageshwar was the resting point on way to Kailash Mansarovar.On your trip you will come across the Vridhashram, Dandeshwar and the old caves dotted around Jageshwar. Overnight stay at Van Serai.

 

Day- 7: Jageshwar- Kathgodam Railwaystation- Delhi
After breakfast Check out from the lodge and proceed for the onwards journey to Delhi.
